The main use of methylated spirits is to light the Trangia alcohol stoves. If you dilute it with 10 % water, it no longer soots on the base of the pot. Spirit is an incredibly versatile liquid, whether for cleaning, degreasing, etc.. The alcohol can also be used to preheat petrol stoves.
